It is not necessary to remove the battery when using AC power since the netbook provides a "trickle charge" to the battery while on AC.
If, however, you plan to not use your notebook at all for several days, it is not a bad idea to remove the battery during extended periods of non-use. Just keep in a cool dry area.
Battery life determined by the activity of the notebook. The battery life time frame will reduce when accessing the hard drive, wireless card, floppy drive, CD-ROM, modem, wireless, PC cards, high video resolutions, etc. These all affect the battery life expectancy.
Unfortunately there isn't a way to pinpoint battery life when using these devices. You can try draining and charging the battery for several cycles to see if the battery life improves.
